The Poem of Chile, written by Nobel Prize winner and Chilean Gabriela Mistral, was created with the image of a Diaguita child. Diaguitas were the ancestral inhabitants of La Serena, connecting the soil with a huge cosmogonic view of the stars. Centuries later, La Serena is the number one region in the world for astronomy and scientific observatory centers. La Serena is the perfect place to learn about the universe and the ancient cultures of southern Chile.
The city of Coquimbo is one of the most important ports in the country due to its location. Coquimbo has become a place of pirate mythology, English cultural heritage, rich “Changos” indigenous culture and marine innovation. Universidad Católica del Norte was founded in 1956 with the purpose of bringing accessible university education to the young individuals living in the regions of northern Chile. Reflecting on the Christian humanist principles, UCN’s main goal is to make a significant contribution to individual growth, community development and regional cultural heritage recognition.
The university believes in its students, especially in their strong ability to develop and spread their own knowledge through teaching, research and connection with the environment. The fundamental principle that guides the academic program of the university is the idea that students themselves are the center of the educational process. As a result, UCN students have become leaders in fields such as Marine Biology, Aquaculture and Conservation of Marine Environment. The main idea is to gain knowledge through local experience, and spread it outside of the borders of the region and the country.
